Title: Pit-fired Stoneware Vessel

Comment: The piece was wheel-thrown using stoneware clay. During the drying process layers of slip (fine clay and water) were applied. After each coating the pot is polished with a soft cloth. This build-up of slip, eight to ten layers, creates a very unique surface on the pot. As the piece is fired carbon and fumes from mineral salts bond into the surface. The effect of this technique can be very stunning, flashes of red, green, silver and iridescent oil spots that seem to float through swirling black clouds.
